Dreamweaver and Losing Site Definitions
I have heard a lot of people experiencing site definition loss with Macromedia Dreamweaver. Try this fix to recover those definitions.
If you are running Windows 98/XP with System Restore, you should be able to recover your definitions with System Restore in your control panel. Please read the updates at the bottom of this section before proceeding. Here are the instructions; proceed at your own risk:
- Download this Macromedia backup utility.
- After downloading the utility, restore your computer to an earlier time when your definitions were working.
- Check your definitions and make sure they are there.
- Install the backup utility on your computer.
- Run the utitlity and make a backup of your site definitions or an entire backup, it's up to you. If you need to undo the restore you made in step 2, proceed to step 6.
- Undo the system restore you did in step 2.
- Install the backup utility again since you will have lost it during the reverse restore procedure.
- Run the backup utility and import the backup you made in step 5.
I don't know any other way to restore lost site definitions in Dreamweaver. I haven't been able to find any other fixes. Macromedia itself doesn't know why it happens or how to fix it. Be sure to back up your site definitions when you add or change a site definition to avoid future loss.
Did you encounter any problems with this fix? Please email me and let me know. Please include relevant details of the problem.
Updates:
Firewall software updates may need to be reinstalled following a restore and/or unrestore procedure. Make sure you have the current updates to reinstall.
Anti-virus software updates and/or definitions may also need to be restored after a restore and/or unrestore procedure. Make sure you have the current updates to reinstall.
